In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar and vanilla. Mix well, you don't want chunks of egg yolk or whites. You can even use a hand blender for this part.
Dip the slices of bread into the egg mixture, coating each side. If you like your french toast firm, coat your bread quickly. If you like it a little less firm (soggy), soak it.
Then gently shake out any excess coating and place the bread onto the preheated skillet for about 4 minutes per side. The sides should be golden brown.
Serve with butter and syrup.
