Having chopped celery ready to add to recipes is the best! I like to keep a bag in the freezer so I can just reach in and scoop out what I need for cooking (no need to thaw). This method is such a time saver when you need chopped celery for mirepoix or any type of sautéing for recipes.

Freezing Celery Tips

  • What to freeze the celery in: I like to keep chopped frozen celery in labelled freezer bags (ziplock or reusable bags). You can also use plastic or glass containers, just make sure they are airtight.
  • Thawing: There is no need to thaw the celery before using. Just use as is.
  • Mirepoix: Mirepoix is a mixture of 3 chopped vegetables: carrots, onion and celery. You can also keep a bag of this mixture in your freezer for ease of cooking.

How to Use Frozen Celery

Frozen chopped/sliced/minced celery can be added to soups, stews, stuffing, casseroles, bakes, chili, or any recipe that requires sautéed celery. Just add it frozen (like you would fresh), the proceed with the recipe. But because freezing changes the texture of the celery, don’t use frozen celery in any recipe like salads, dips, or salsas that require fresh celery.

Now what to do with celery leaves?

Don’t toss away the celery leaves! I freeze the leaves as well and use them to make soup stock. I keep a bag in the freezer where I toss in clean vegetable waste like celery leaves and onion skins, then I use them to make vegetable stock, or add them with turkey or chicken bones to make stock.
