Apple Pie Oatmeal Recipe Tips

  • Oats: You can use rolled oats, quick oats, quick cooking steel cut oats or even a 7 or 10 grain cereal mix. Or any combination of these, just as long as you have 1 cup total.
  • Dates: Chopped dates are added for extra fibre and sweetness. But you can substitute them with chopped raisins, or even 2 tbsp brown sugar or maple syrup.
  • Apples: This recipe calls for 1 apple, peeled and chopped. You can add 2 if you want it really apple-y. Use any type of apple (MacIntosh, Granny Smith Apples, Honeycrisp, Gala).
  • Spice: This recipe calls for 1 tsp of ground cinnamon. But you can substitute that with 1 tsp of apple pie spice.
  • Additions: This recipe is so versatile. You can add more hearty ingredients if you wish. I’ve made a list of ideas below.
  • Leftovers: Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Just reheat in the microwave.

Optional Oatmeal Additions

The great thing about this hearty oatmeal is how flexible the ingredients are. Start with a base of 1 cup of oats of your choosing, then feel free to add seeds, nuts, coconut, dried fruit…it’s up to you! Here are some ideas.

  • Oats: Rolled or Quick
  • Quick Cooking Steel Cut Oats
  • 7 or 10 Hot Cereal Mix (like Bob’s Red Mill)
  • Fresh Apples (pears are great too)
  • Chopped Dates
  • Chia Seeds
  • Hemp Seeds
  • Flax Seeds
  • Raisins
  • Dried Fruit: chopped apricots, cranberries
  • Chopped Nuts: almonds, pecans, walnuts
  • Shredded Unsweetened Coconut

Serving Suggestion:

Serve this cooked apple cinnamon oatmeal with cream or almond milk. Add a drizzle of maple syrup or brown sugar, fresh diced apples with cinnamon, and chopped nuts. Sometimes we like to add a dollop of nut butter (almond butter or peanut butter), or a spoonful of greek yogurt.

Make Ahead Tip!

Sometimes I like to double the recipe so that we can have this hearty apple oatmeal for breakfast for busy mornings during the week. Just reheat individual servings in the microwave.
